“Tech” refers to your special attack ability or magic. “Single Tech” refers to an attack you perform by yourself. To learn Combos, all characters that form the Combo must fight a battle together and be capable of using the required Tech/magic skills. When more than one character is ready for battle and they have both learned a Combo together, Techs will be displayed as "Comb".

Crono	Crono is the best fighter in the game. He utilises very powerful sword Techs and attack magic, and he can use other Techs in combination with various characters. Examples of Crono’s Techs include: Cyclone, Slash, Lightning and Spincut.
Marle	Marle is not very strong physically, but her magic is very powerful. Her healing powers are essential to your success. Examples of Marle’s Techs include: Provoke, Ice and Cure.
Lucca	Lucca is not very strong, but her magic is the most powerful, especially when she is paired with Crono. Examples of Lucca’s Techs include: Flame Toss, Hypno Wave, Fire and Napalm.
Frog	Like Crono, Frog is a capable fighter and often delivers critical hits. He knows healing magic and is effective against many of his enemies. Examples of Frog’s Techs include: Slurp, Slurp Cut, Water and Heal.
Robo	Robo possesses a very powerful body. Together with Crono and Frog, his triple Tech can be incredibly effective. Examples of Robo’s Techs include: the Rocket Punch, Cure Beam, Laser Spin and Robo Tackle.
Ayla	Ayla cannot use magic, but her strength more than makes up for it. Her best Tech is stealing items, especially from certain bosses. Examples of Ayla’s Techs include: Kiss, Rollo Kick, Cat Attack and Rock Throw.

You do not know any magic at the start of the game and must be taught how to use it by Spekkio, who you will meet during your adventure.

The types of magic are: Lightning, Water, Fire and Shadow. Combining the first three types creates Shadow magic, the strongest type of all, and the one used by the forces of evil. Different enemies are affected by different types of magic.
