Basic Play

Guide Wonder Boy left and right through the various fields and dungeons, move up and down the ladders, and hop onto moving and stationary platforms to advance through the rounds. Defeat enemies along the way for items or Gold. If you earn enough Gold, find and enter a shop to buy better equipment or useful items.

Life Gauge and Hourglass
The Life Gauge (indicated by the number of hearts) at the top of the screen represents your hit points. You will lose hit points from the Life Gauge if you take damage from (or make contact with) an enemy. The Life Gauge will also deplete with time. The hourglass displayed at the top of the screen indicates the time remaining until one full heart will be lost from the Life Gauge. The game will be over if the Life Gauge is completely depleted and you do not have a Revival Potion. An additional heart will be added to your Life Gauge when your score reaches 30,000, 100,000, 200,000, 300,000 and 400,000.

Enemies and Items
Attack the enemies with either your sword or Special Weapons/Magical Spells (if you have one; see page 6). Some enemies will require that you hit them with several attacks in order to defeat them. Be aware that enemies will regenerate at the same spot after a period of time. An enemy will drop either Gold or an item upon being defeated. Don’t be too greedy though, as they will not drop anything after the third time they have been defeated.
