Roller Derby is a team sport where skaters from two teams attempt to score points by passing skaters from the opposite team.
The players who score points for their team are called JAMMERS. Each team has one jammer. Jammers race to score points in two-minute events called JAMS. A jam can only be ended before the full two minutes if the LEAD JAMMER calls it off early.
The first jammer to make it out of the pack of defenders is the LEAD JAMMER. Once the jammer has made their initial pass through the pack, they score a point every time they pass an opponent until the end of the jam.
If you are lead jammer and want to end the jam early, you can press up on the +Control Pad to stop the jam and lock in the points from that jam. It's a handy strategic move. If you're not lead jammer, you can't stop the jam early.
When approaching the pack, you can signal a strategy in to your teammates with the LEFT, RIGHT and DOWN arrows of the +Control Pad. LEFT will select the WALL strategy, where your teammates attempt to move to the front of the pack and stop the enemy jammer from passing. DOWN on the +Control Pad selects ASSIST, and your teammates will focus on helping you through the pack. RIGHT on the +Control Pad selects ONE-ON-ONE, and your teammates will try to block the opponent nearest them. If you do not choose a strategy, one will be chosen for you at random.
If you are behind a teammate you can waggle the Wii Remote to accept a forward whip from them, which may help you speed through the pack.
A JAM CITY ROLLERGIRLS bout lasts ten minutes, but the game will continue until the final jam is over with.
Bouts cannot end in ties. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, you'll play a bonus jam. If a bonus jam ends in a tie, another bonus jam will be played until the tie is broken.
